Spring Break Holidays
Monday, March 31 - Sunday, April 6, 2014

First Day Back after Spring Break:
The first day back for the Monday/Wednesday class will be Monday, April 7th, 2014.
The first day back for the Tuesday/Thursday class will be Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

Early Dismissal:

The Monday/Wednesday class will be dismissed on Wednesday, March 5th at 2:25 p.m. as it is the first Wednesday of the month.  Please meet your child in the boot room at 2:25 p.m. that day if you normally pick up your child.
Bus students will be catching the bus at that time.
Report Cards
Report cards will be going home on the following days.
The Monday/Wednesday Class will get their Report Cards on Wednesday, March 19th, 2014.
The Tuesday/Thursday Class will get their Report Cards on Friday, March 21st, 2014.

Student-Led Conferences:
This term the school will be holding student-led conferences instead of the traditional parent-teacher interviews.   This is where your child will guide you through several different activities they do on a daily basis to demonstrate what they have and are learning.  We have found this to be a much more informative way for parents to see what their child is able to do rather than sitting with the teacher repeating everything written in the report card.  Attached is a form for you to fill out on which time(s) you would prefer to come in with your child.  Choices are filled in on a first returned basis.  Please note that there will be 3 to 4 other families in the room with you, rotating around the centers as well.  I ask that no other siblings come so that you may focus on your Kindergarten child as this will be their time to shine for you.  Once we receive everyone’s selection we will attach a note confirming your time to your child’s report card.
Student-Led Conferences will take place on the evenings of
Wednesday , March 26th, 2014 and on Thursday, March 27, 2014.

It is preferred that you sign up for the same evening that your child attends class.
Ex. If your child attends the Monday/Wednesday Class, please pick a time on Wednesday, March 26th.

Puppet Lady In Class Presentation
On March 10th and March 11th, the Puppet Lady will be in our class teaching the Kindergarten students about different types of puppets and the students will have a chance to use her puppets to create a puppet show.  This presentation will take the whole morning.
Pancake Tuesday
Tuesday, March 4th, is Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday.  All students at Willow Park School will be given 2 free pancakes (with syrup) and a juice box for lunch.  If your child does not like/want or feel that 2 pancakes will be enough for lunch, please send a regular lunch with them that day.
The Mon./Wed. class will receive their pancake lunch on Wednesday, March 5th.
Recess/Extra Clothing
After Spring Break, all the Kindergarten students will be enjoying the same 3 recesses as the rest of the school.  With the onset of spring comes puddles and slush.  Puddles mean: run, jump and get wet!!!  Please send extra socks and splash pants each day as keeping children out of the puddles is like asking the sun not to shine!!  PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHES!!
Rubber Boots
Every spring, we have major stress (students included) over whose black and orange boots are whose and whose butterfly boots belong to whom.  With so many boots that look the same, we are asking the both boots be well labelled so that someone else does not go home with your child’s boots.  Thank you in advance.
Father’s Day
Just a reminder, even though Father’s Day is not for several months, we are preparing for the gift we would like your child to make for their dads.  For this gift, we need a 4 X 6 sized picture of just your Kindergarten child with their dad.  Also, if you have small to medium sized bolts/nuts/screws that you have no purpose for, we will start collecting them now.
Extra Information Sheets:
Throughout the year, we will be sending home newsletters from the Occupational Therapist.  Everyone in the class will receive these as general information.
Attached is a sheet called,” The Power of Play”, as information for you as parents

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 780-986-8456 or e-mail

Thank you,

 Beginning Sounds Scavenger Hunt

Here is a game to play at home over Spring Break.  Below are all the letters we have covered in our Phonics program on small pieces of paper.  Lay them on your living room floor.  You may only want to put 2 or 3 at a time.  Set the timer on the stove for 15 minutes and ask your child to search the house for items that begin with the letters.  Either bring the item to the letter card or take the card to the item (e.g. C is for car).  Then, together, think of other items that also begin with the letters.  You may also choose to print the words of the items on the letter cards, or have your child attempt to sound out the words.  Please encourage “invented spelling”, where the child spells what he/she hears and is not corrected by you.  Mistakes are okay at this stage!
Have fun.
