A Small Lot Story Event 3(TOM)

We are so close to the conclusion.

Story Writing

A Small Lot

Event 3(Top of the Mountain)

Well we are close to the conclusion.  We are on the Top of the Mountain.  The best part of the story.  The problem gets solved.  When your child writes their TOM they make it appear like Event 1 or 2, but in at the end of it all the problem gets solved.  Together we wrote our class TOM.  Please remember the TOM usually is a little longer due to the problem being solved.

Later that day, Lily and Hayden were playing farmer on the lot when a chef dashed to the lot.  He stopped and stared at the space for a while.  Out loud he announced, “This would be the perfect spot for my new French bistro.  I would even have space for a small outdoor patio during the warm summers.  I think this space would be fantastic!”  I will bring all my friends and family here tomorrow afternoon to look at this magnificent lot and buy it.”  He turned around and held his head high and strutted away.  That evening, Lily and Hayden were upset.  They were terrified that they would lose their amazing play spot.  Together they came up with a plan that could save their special place.  All night long they stayed up and painted signs, moved flowers, bushes and benches to the vacant lot.  By morning the girls had made the empty, dirty lot into a beautiful community park with a huge painted sign saying, “Welcome to Royal Community Park”.  The once empty lot now had colorful flowers, lush green bushes and blossoming trees.  The lot was decorated with a quiet reading bench and a sandbox for kids to play in.  That afternoon as promised the chef drove up to the lot with his family and friends.  They all looked puzzled at the lot.  The chef questioned, “That’s weird, I don’t remember that sign or the bench?  They weren’t there before??  I can’t build my restaurant here.  This lot is a community park!” Slowly the chef and his family and friends drove away from the lot.

A Small Lot

We have been working with the story "A Small Lot" found in the reader on page 20.  The students have started creating their own story based on "The Small Lot".  All students should have an Introduction and Event 1.
Today we worked on Event 2.  Event 2 is the same as Event 1.  The only difference is you change the character and the descriptive words.  Please have your child come to school with a completed Event 2

Event 1

Today in class we worked on Event 1 of our story, "The Small Lot " This is found on page 21 of our class reader. Below we modeled Event 1.  Basically, the story problem looks like it will be solved, but at the last moment it is not.  Perfect example; The three little pigs.  The first event is the "straw house"

Lily and Hayden were playing in the empty lot when a little old lady with a cane staggered by.  She stopped and stared at the lot for a while.  Out loud she thought, “This would be the perfect spot for my new sewing shop.”  After thinking it over she whispered to herself, “I think this space maybe too small for all my sewing machines.  I think I will continue to look around for a bigger space.”  Slowly the old lady hobbled away.  All day long, Lily and Hayden played seamstress in the empty lot.

Please have your child work on their Event 1, "The Small Lot".

Event 2

The next morning, friendly Lily and shy Hayden were playing in the tiny lot when a loud boisterous farmer wearing a straw hat and munching on a piece of straw meandered to the dusty, rocky lot.  He stopped and stared at the lot for a while.  Out loud he shouted, “This would be the perfect spot for my new petting zoo.”  After thinking it over he mumbled to himself, “I think this space maybe too rocky and dusty to grow any crops.  There just is not enough grass to feed all my animals.  I will keep looking for a lot that has way more green grass.”   He turned around and strolled away.  All day long, Lily and Hayden played petting zoo in the sandy plot of land.

A Small Lot

We have been working with the story "A Small Lot" found in the reader on page 20.  The students have started creating their own story based on "The Small Lot".  Today we worked on our Introductions.  A solid Introduction lets the reader know three important story parts.
1)Setting
2)Introduce and describe the main character(s)
3)Describes the problem of the story

As a class, together we wrote the following Introduction example.

On a hot, sunny day two girls were playing in a empty lot on their quiet street. Hayden was a playful, cheery blonde haired, blue eyed little girl. Her best friend was Lily. Lily was an energetic, ambitious 8 year old. She had brown curly hair and wore pink glasses. Everyday the two girls looked forward to meeting up and playing in the small, vacant lot. To their surprise the two girls noticed a for sale sign on their tiny, play lot.

Please have your child write their own introduction for their own version of, "The Small Lot"
